Cambridge is a 50-minute train ride from London King's Cross. The University of Cambridge has 31 colleges (vs Oxford's 38), with most of the famous ones — King's, Trinity, St. John's, Queens' — sitting along the River Cam in a stretch known as 'the Backs' that you can punt past in a single 45-minute trip. King's College Chapel, with its Tudor fan-vaulted ceiling, is the most-photographed building in the city.
The best Cambridge half-day is the standard pattern: a 90-minute punting tour past the colleges (lots of operators on Quayside or Mill Lane), then a walking tour of the central colleges, then a wander to the Fitzwilliam Museum (free entry, collection). Cambridge feels smaller and more compact than Oxford — most things are within a 15-minute walk of Market Square. The market itself is open daily and is good for lunch.
