Oxford is a 1-hour train ride from London Paddington, which is why most of the tour bookings on this site are day-trips. The University of Oxford is made up of 38 individual colleges scattered across the city center, several of which double as filming locations (Christ Church for Harry Potter's Great Hall, Bodleian Library for the Hogwarts library). The standard tour format is a 2-hour walking tour that visits 3-4 colleges plus the Bodleian, Radcliffe Camera, and the Sheldonian Theatre.
Punting on the River Cherwell — a flat-bottomed boat propelled with a long pole — is the other classic Oxford activity. Magdalen Bridge Boathouse (May-September) and Cherwell Boathouse rent for self-punt or guided trips. Most of our partners offer combined walking + punting half-days, which is the best one-day Oxford pattern. Avoid mid-June for matriculation/exam-season closures of some colleges; September is the sweet spot.
